CAPA was Awarded the Horizon Foundation Mental Health Community Engagement Grant for the Second  Year

November 22, 2019 – The Horizon Foundation approved a grant to CAPA in supporting of the Mental Health Community Engagement Grants program.

 

SY 2019-2020 Achieve Success Together (AST) Opening Ceremony

October 25, 2019 – Achieve Success Together 2019-2020 Opening Ceremony was held on Oct 25 at HCPSS Homewood Center.

AST is a a collaborative effort of CAPA, HCPSS and the Howard County government to close opportunity gaps among disadvantaged students. It provides equitable access to education opportunities for FARM and ESOL students in Howard County.

Thanks to the distinguished keynote speakers, Angela Cabellon from County Executive Dr. Calvin Ball’s office, Board of Education member Dr. Chao Wu, and James LeMon from HCPSS central office representing Superintendent Dr. Martirano for their inspirational speech and sharing their great personal stories. Thanks to Bellows Spring teacher Mrs. Lindsey Kim for her professional training to our newly recruited high school tutors. Thanks to the leadership team and all tutors for your hard work. It will certainly be another great year!

CAPA will testify at a BOE public hearing to strongly against Superintendent’s proposed attendance area adjustment plan.

AST Run for Census Program

August 22, 2019 – Run for Census! Our young people are promoting 2020 Census awareness by running at Centennial Park wearing t-shirt with Maryland 2020 Census logo every Saturday morning. Thanks to team leaders Annabelle Gao, Marlia Nash, Payton Carroll and Jessie Zong for leading this effort.

CAPA Census Partnership Information Session

August 3, 2019 – CAPA hold a 2020 Census information session to the leaders of our partner organizations, League of Korea Americans, Indian Origin Network, Kenyans Live in Howard County, Peiying Chinese School, Howard County Chinese School, CAPA of Montgomery County and CAPA of Baltimore County.

Julius Valentine Maina, Partnership Specialist of from the US Census Bureau and Audra Harrison, Director of the Maryland Census, Maryland Department of Planning were invited to present. They shared information regarding the impact of the Census on the community and how community leaders can facilitate the process. President Jean Xu led the discussion on how the community organizations reach out to the hard-to-count population. Thanks to our business partner, SECU, for sponsoring this event.

Promote 2020 Census at River Hill Independence Day Parade

July 4, 2019 – CAPA as one of the State 2020 Census Outreach grantees kicked off its one-year long project in an unique way. In collaboration with multiple organizations, CAPA organized Independence Day parade promoting census awareness. Along the way, we received huge support from the crowd. Some residents cheered “2020 Census” and “Everyone Counts” to respond the Maryland Census slogan in one of the banners we displayed – Every Marylander Counts! We were even asked where to purchase the census shirt!

Big thanks to Young Smith from League of Korean Association, Pravin Ponurri from Indian Origin Network, Zotum Hmung from Chin Integration and Advocacy Network, Sarah Mugo from Kenyans living in Howard County, Will Lee from Korean Community Service Center of Greater Washington and Ru Huang from Peiying Chinese School. We are very grateful that you bring your community and family to celebrate this important holiday of our great nation, support 2020 Census together with us and show patriotism as immigrants! It is a huge milestone in Howard County and we made it together!

2019 Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month Celebration

May 5, 2019 – CAPA’s Panel discussion to kick off the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Many thinks to the amazing panelists: Angela Cabellon, Theo Goetemann, Dr. Seema Iyer, David Lee and Ting Ma. We really appreciate all of you for sharing your career and personal journey. They are very inspirational. We are very grateful to Mrs. Kui Zhao as our moderator. She ran the event smoothly and professionally. CAPA Received a State Funding for 2020 Census Community Outreach

 April 1, 2019 – We enthusiastically announce that Chinese American Parent Association of Howard County is awarded a $50,000 grant by the Maryland Department of Planning. CAPA will partner with the Howard County Complete Count Committee, diverse community organizations, foreign born groups to educate the public importance of Census 2020 to ensure a reliable and inclusive census count and increase the self-response rate among all people in the county.

February 15, 2019 – CAPA President Jean Xu and Board Member Jodie Wang, along with Indian community leaders met with Howard County Police Chief Lisa D. Myers and County Chief of Staff Sameer Sidh.

February 5, 2019 – CAPA organized Maryland  State House Tour sponsored by District 9 Senator Katie Fry Hester. Over 30 children and their parents participated.

CAPA Sponsored Lunar New Year Celebration at Dayton Oaks Elementary School

February 4, 2019 – CAPA sponsored Lunar New Year celebration at Dayton Oaks ES. This is the first local school culture event supported by CAPA with funding. Grant application is requested to apply for the fund.
