2019 AAPI Heritage Month Video and Essay Contest

The Chinese American Parent Association of Howard County (CAPA-HC) and the Chinese American Parent Association of Montgomery County (CAPA-MC) announce their 2019 AAPI Heritage Month Video and Essay Contest for middle and high school students. 
Contest Rules

1. Divisions​ 

    The contest is open to students enrolled in grades 6-12 in public, private or home schools from 

    Pennsylvania, Maryland, D.C.,  and Virginia.

  • Junior Division : Students who are in the 6th-8th grade for the 2018-2019 school year

  • Senior Division : Students who are in the 9th-12th grade for the 2018-2019 school year

2. Categories

  • Essay

    • Minimum of 350 words but no more than 600 words​

    • Must be an original creation by an individual and any outside information must be cited

  • Video​

    • Maximum of 2 minutes​

    • Must be an original creation by an individual. If copyrighted music, videos, or images are used, cite them on the entry form.

    • If the person(s) in the video are under 18 years of age at the time of entry, the contestant(s) must have permission from parent(s) / guardian(s), and an adult must review and submit the entry.​

3. Prompts

  • You may choose one of the following prompts:  

    • How does Asian American and Pacific Islander culture affect you?​

    • What is your family’s immigration story?

  • No matter which prompt a contestant chooses, all people who compete in a certain category and division will be judged together​

4. Submission

  • All submissions must be through the Google Form by May 31, 2019 11:59PM ET

  • Essay

    • Must be typewritten, double-spaced with the contestant’s name and grade in the header.​

    • Upload the PDF file of your essay through Google Form.

  • Video​

    • Must be uploaded to YouTube unlisted​

    • Copy and paste the YouTube link into the indicated location on the Google Form

5. Judging Criteria

  • Judged by originality, creativity and adherence to the prompts

  • Results will be announced the first week of June

6. Prizes

    The top five students in each category for both the high school and middle school divisions will 

    receive the following prizes:

  • 1st place: $150

  • 2nd place: $100

  • 3rd place: $75

  • 2 Honorable mentions: $25 each

7. Ownership and License

  • Ownership in any submission shall remain the property of the contestant, but entry into this contest constitutes contestant’s irrevocable permission and consent that CAPA may display, copy, reproduce, enhance, print, sublicense, publish, distribute and create derivative works for CAPA purposes.

  • Submission of entry into this contest constitutes acceptance of all rules and conditions.
